The fear of Trying New Things

Postby Beachbum » Thu Jun 18, 2009 11:00 am

I dropped into a hefty overhead wave and pumped like a mad man to escape the wall from crushing me, but I really wanted to blast the lip with all my might. I think of all the new things I want to try out there while surfing, but never actually do.... Does this happen to you folks? I get a nice wave, but don't end up trying a new trick because I'm afraid of falling, ruining the wave, or getting hurt  .
When I'm on a wave, there's never any time to think of these things haha.

Here's a tip for you. Go out with one thing in mind.......like "I'm going to practice my botom turns" or whatever it is you want to get better at.

I do that all the time unless it's smokin'.....then I'm ready for it all to come together.

Oh.....and also believe in yourself......if you don't, no one else will.

peace

This troubled me for a long time it's horrible to fall off a really good wave because you mucked up a turn. I found the best training wasnt clean long lines but short waves that closed out after a few seconds all the wave allowed was you to drop in and try the biggest turn you could. There is nothing to lose as the waves dont have long rides - after consistantly doing that for a spell when the waves got good again i was able to use that new found skill on better waves. To a certain degree if its big and clean i may not do as many turns as id like. Its a great feeling to shred a long clean line and feel like you actually surfed that wave really well :D

I was practicing today on a decent swell, since the past week has been flat, and it was a fun experience. I tried to hit the lip over a surfer duckdiving and still managed to land on top of him. He was cool about it and I apologized haha.

Do you guys kick out your tail when hitting the lip? I just let the wave's force toss me back onto the wave's face.

^ I absolutely agree with you.

Go to a break that offers the kind of wave that will allow you to do the move you want to practice.
For the whole session do only that move ( I got bored once doing the same thing over and over - but at a different break it was like 'omg - what a move on that wave - awesome ! ).

Besides, many practice moves without others knowing, and its comes as quite a surprise to some when they see the move!

........ move you wanted - agree here too.

Short, sharp shock surfing continually doing the move you want to try to master !
