I came accross this board that my shaper made, the deck uses a layer of aluminum between two layers of epoxy.:

I called my shaper, he says the only advantage is that it becomes super hard, totally ding free. I asked him if it made it that much heavier, he said no more than say using volan or having a double 6oz wrap.

So, what do you think? Looks cool or looks weird? Just considering it as a future board idea...

if it really is as light as he says it is go for it and post how you got on. really hard on boards so open to alternatives.

hey so this is off topic, but im going to order a custom board over the summer. my first custom! until now all the boards i have been bought have been used off craigslist becuase i cant afford a new custom one. but ive finally saved enough to get one. anyway i noticed you shaper has a 619 area code so i was wondering where his shop is located exactly? and how much he generally charges? and why you would reccomend him in general over other shapers? i am from chula vista and all the shapers ive searched online are in the OB, La Jolla, Oceanside area. id like to find someone closer to my area. anyway thanks for the help, much appreciated.

I've been using Addict Surfboards for the past 3 years and you can't beat the price, Micah is a super shaper, he's located in Sorrento Valley. I work in National City, but to me it's worth the drive. A fiberglass board up to 7ft will set you back $385, paint extra but if not complicated he will do it for as little as $25 . Closer to Chula Vista, TNT surfboards has a bunch of shapers at their bays, they are in Imperial Beach. One I have used and dig is Novak Surfboards, Jay Novak is a great shaper. A fiberglass board is probably $460, paint another $40+. Here is his link, but once again, forget emailing him:

Lastly, if you want some in San Diego, and want to go higher end, google Plus1 surfboards and Sharpeye surfboards, both do customs starting at $495 + paint. Great brands, but you are paying the difference. Call them, they don't reply to emails either. Both located in the sports arena area

Honestly, of the three, I keep going back to Micah because of the price and because he keeps getting the boards right.

wow thankyou for all that info mathteacher. very very helpful stuff. i goto say im leaning towards the Addict boards seeing as how the price and boards are great. 385 for a new custom thats such a great price, with that kinda price i can afford to throw on some extra goodies. right now im in school at uc santa cruz, so i wont be ordering the board until i get out, and head back to san diego, which i do on june 12. but i plan on going to a shaper practically as soon as i get back to SD. i also just broke my only shortboard on the cliff at steamer lane so i cant surf till i get my new board haha! so getting my custom pronto is whats on my mind. so ill def. be emailing you for more in depth info on the shaper, and just general tips since your already accostumed to the shaping game, within the next month. i actually got admitted as a transfer student to UCSD, so ill actually be back in san diego again.

btw are you really a math teacher? i actually plan on being a political science teacher for either highschool or college haha
