Goodbye Favorite Board

My very first custom board, had it shaped 7 years ago. I held on to it and baby'd it. But finally, it hit the "never use it" category and it had to go. It was an Ellington custom thruster, 6'6" x 19 3/4 x 2 1/2. The board rocked, it was just big enough for my shortboard transition, smalll enough to start ripping. It was a little fuller in the rails but still gunny and hard enough to hold up in steep waves. Had my first barrel in it.

Bought a Rusty the same size thinking it would be better, got rid of that. Bought a Merrick the same size, got rid of that. Just kept trying boards and nothing came close, so every time it got brought up and the other boards got sold off. Finally a year ago I had a custom carbon 6'5" x 19 1/2" x 2 1/2" and my shaper got it perfect, so the Ellington started collecting dust.

I swore I would never sell it, but a buddy that is progressing tried it and loved it, he bought an afterburner and a 7S and just could not handle them, he tried mine once and he just fell in love with it and begged me to sell it. Already miss it, but I know the new owner will rip on it, so glad to pass on the stoke.

Not sure why I posted this, was just thinking about it today...

Kind of the same with a Spider Murphy 6'3 that was given to me by my brother, loved it but then I got a nice Warner and replaced it... but to be fair the Murphy was completely done with. Think it eventually had 21 dings at the end of its days haha, such a bored though!

Yeah, I had a totally beat up Boysen that I gave to one of my students, I was done with it and was going to put it on Craigslist but for the price I gave it away instead. Kid hardly ever surfs, but always smiles when I see him. Passing on the stoke...

I wish I'd never sold my first shortboard. It was 6'8 Nigel Semmens Ocean Magic board, with a really cool paint job. It had a bit of volume, but also ripped nice. I dropped to a 6'6 x 18 x 2 which was just too small. I then couldn't afford to buy another for 11 years and I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I had kept my old one!

I did sell it to someone who loved it though, which makes me feel better.
