Will a thumb tail work in small waves, as in knee high and bigger? Or should I just get a squash?

shortboards dont really work in knee high waves. i can ride my pin tail in the same as my squash if needed but never really surf unless it's bigger than 2ft (chest high) on the shortboard.

Except for my fishes all my boards are thumbnails. At 200lbs here is my shortboard quiver:
6'5" x 19 x 2.5 thumb - all purpose fun
6'6 x 19 x 2.5 thumb - same as above, my backup board
6'8" x 20 x 2.65 thumb - for small days, big mush days, or for when I feel lazy and want uber paddling ability
7'0 x 19 x 2.5 rounded pin - semi gun for bigger days
8'0 x 20 x 2.6 rounded pin - big gun for big big days.
If you are not as fat as I am then you get smaller ones, but you get the idea
