how to surf on a shorboard...

Postby Texas Surfer » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:01 am

hey, whatsup?

I started surfing a year ago, and finally got some noserides on my ten-two this summer, and was stoked on all the waves...but I decided to buy a shorboard, so I got a South Point Keone Downing 6 foot 7. I actually caught a great wave before Hurricane Ike hit, and found out that a quad-fin turns really fast! I was stoked on the great wave, but for some reason, had trouble dropping-in to the waves today...maybe it was too much Energy drink, or the fact that I had only an hour until sunset, but the fact is...I was paddling straight for the beach...I didn't turn on my drop, or even try to...and I always do on my longboard...also, I don't feel like my feet stick as well to my shorboard when I pop up...and this "deck pad" thing feels wierd...and my paddling is gay-looking...any suggestions?

thanks!!! :D

keep practicing. you have the right mindset and information already.

when your feet is not sticking well, you probably place it incorrectly.
your foot was probably lined up like this if ur not sticking well

dude, what's "whack" ?

Oh, and yeah, if you're missing waves, just try paddling harder, or closer to the break of the wave.. It's also possible you're too far back on your board, so move forward to the point where only the tip of your board is out of the water, and all should just start coming together.

^ yup ......... and

“had trouble dropping-in to the waves today”
Catch the waves that look as though they are going to break on your head.

“only an hour until sunset”
Go earlier

“I don't feel like my feet stick as well to my shorboard when I pop up”
It’s less stable

“this "deck pad" thing feels weird”
Yeah ! You’ll get used to it

“and my paddling is gay-looking...any suggestions?”
Wear a thong.

Gay as in happy?? or gay as homosexual??? cuase most homos I see paddle fine. HA HA na jus kidn... or am I??? Just like it was at first on your 10' or on any board, you need to find the right spot to lay and paddle and pop and stand etc. You know what your doing by now so real time practice is what the Dr. orderd and your feet are sticking just fine the shorty is squirley and washing out from under you and um well the stomp pad is there for a reason.lol. Scoot a lil more up till as mentiond (your tip is only thing poken out and fine tune from there scratch a spot with some wax where your eyes go and your set. As the paddle thing goes HA HA HA it aint 10', takes a bit more umph so again real water time will improve that and when you finaly get it, take your log out next time and check out how friggin fast you'll be paddlin.Ha ha ha. Good luck and (happy surfin)
