Thinking of buying a Flyer. Got a few Q's

I'm new to surfing but I've gotten up and ridden on smaller baords and fun baords and feal I'm doing quite well.

My question is I'm 5'9 to 5'10 and weigh 145. I surf around the Sebastian beach area in Fl. If I bought an Al Merrick flyer what size flyer would be right for me? Also would this be a good board for this area after reading some reviews and seeing it in the water it looks like an ideal board.

Yes, at your stage of surfing you clearly need a high performace board from one of the fashionable and well-known shapers.

Remember to get this year's Billabong board shorts too, else you might end up looking like a kook.

Oh cmon you guys ... is it so bad to want to learn on a shortboard? At least he is looking at a Flyer and not a thinner board. And taking his word at face value, it sounds like he at least is not starting from day 0.

As for the name brand ... if you got the cash to burn, why not??

Seriously – if you wanted to have it so easy learning to surf, why not just buy a massive wooden plank and bolt on some jet ski engines to it?? Hey you’d be standing up in no time haha.

Nope, but getting an Al Merrick shortboard as your first board is just asking for it - both on a forum and in the water.

It just screams 'wannabe'.

And, yes, an Al Merrick flyer is a suitable board for smaller waves, but isnt suitable for learning. And 'Ive gotten up and ridden' doesnt fill me with confidence that this would be the right board for young Mr. Nate.

PS Its cold and wet, the surf is blown out, and Im feeling very sore having overdone it on the bouldering wall earlier this week, so perhaps Im just grumpy today.

Alright thats somewhat of what I wanted to know but since al marrick board is not whats needed what would be a good board to go with in my general direction.

That, I will agree with ... my first board was a 6-0 Bruce Jones (??) I picked up for $40 bucks. It was beaten to all hell.

But as for what Nate's skill level is, I just take whatever people say on forums at face value ... I don't know the guy so who am I to second guess? Besides, one of the great things about surfing is that it truly keeps you honest - no faking out the ocean when it comes to skill level. And that alone makes it self regulating.

Nate, I think what people are saying is just get something used or more affordable. You can still get a shortboard with mass like the Flyer and not have to have the tell-tale CI honeycomb shapes on it.

Ok I get what you guys are saying and please try to understand what I'm saying I'm not wanting this board for the name or the look of what I'm carrying I just seen that it was recommended for about what the area i surf is like and I thought it might do well.

For the record, I recently got a CI MX and paid top dollar for it.

Granted, I've been riding for a while now and have only touched shortboards.

Did I get it for the name? Yup. Did I get it cos it looks cool? Yup. Does it ride as good as it looks? Yup. Did I have the cash to burn? Yup. If I had the cash to burn would I get a Porsche over a Camry even though both get me from point A to B but I like the name, it looks cool, and drives as good as it looks? I'll let you answer that one.

Chill out. You asked for opinions and you got 'em. Some may have been slightly sarky, but no one was aggressive...

Ha ha ha, feckin' hilarious

Yes, maybe I was a bit harsh on my first post, and after that you should realise I was mostly taking the piss out of myself, to people that I know, in person.

And as you say - threats on the internet are pretty pointless

In his defense, he did provide this disclaimer ...

Anyway, I think the original question was answered with enough varying opinions ... good luck, Nate.
