Surfing Waves

hey i'm 5'4" and i got an estimate from one of the sites you guys recommended which would tell you what board you should use based on your weight.

now i'm less than 50kg but seeing as my height is 5'4", isn't a 6' board a little too short for me?

its fine if you're a intermediate, but if you're starting out, i'd recommend something bigger. maybe like 6'4"+shortboard or a mini mal.

ok well i'm just getting started. i don't even have a board yet and i've never surfed.

that's kinda what i was thinking too. that i should probably get a 6'4" board. i didn't want something too big either. i wanted something small so i could be able to handle it better. thanks

Just don't give up. If it seems too hard with a 6'4", go with a min mal or a long board, then go back to the small board. Good luck with surfing, smile in the line up!

nah i don't think i'll give up. this is something i've been wanting to do for the longest while. and when i say the longest while, i mean like since i was about 10 and seeing it on espn. so at least i know it's not a phase i'm going through.

all i have to do now is save up enough money to get a board! that should be soon enough though

I wouldn't go over a 6'8" though. It will be too big and cumberson for you to move around in the water.

It depends on how long you want it to be before you can ride a wave. If you are willing to stick it out going a couple times a week for a month or two start off with what has been sugested. With most people by this time you will be abel to stand up and go straight ahead. If you want to be riding waves in a few days go with a board in the 8 foot to low nine foot range. You can always sell the board later if you want to go shorter. I have taught a lot of people to surf and find it much easier to teach them on a long board then a short board. They all want to start off on a short board I let them try then take them to a longer board and they always thank me. Good luck.

well i don't mind if it takes me a while until i can ride a wave standing up on the board. it'll also be kinda difficult for me to sell my board if i buy a big one at first. so i think i'll just stick to the shorter board, like maybe a 6'4", that you guys recommended.

it also depends on what you feel comfortable with, i'm 5'10 i weigh 155 and i surf with a 6' footer, i also have a 6'2, but i just use the 6'0'. it works great for me..

i understand what you're saying. i know i won't know until i get in the water with a board but i always figured out that since i'm 5'4" i'll be more comfortable with a board that's at least a foot loner than me. guess i'll see soon enough hopefully.

Borrow someones board, or rent a board that is REALLY long (9 foot) for a day or two, then borrow someones 8 footer, then move on to a 6'4", beleave me, it will save you ton of frustration.

Over here (UK), we generally go 2ft taller than yourself to start with. I started a lot smaller and struggled! I generally surf just weekends (120 miles from sea).
When I went to an 8'4 I got to the nose, learned to turn and felt a lot happier with my surfing. I have a 7'6 and if anything would go bigger next board.
