quite a few people have died through their leash getting caught on rocks when they're surfing and drowning. probably because you panic and don't always think about whats happening.

yeah, ppl can't really think clear when there's an adrenaline rush, also most likely from a wipeout so there isn't enough time to get enough oxygen to stay in the water long enough.

I always have my leash lose-ish, so that in a critical situation it will slip off, but not that lose that it will slip off if it just gets pulled by a wave

Unfortunately, tis true. More than one surfer has drowned here in San Diego County when they got caught by the lanyard of a lobster trap.

In larger surf you cant move as the preasure of the water pushing on you can stop you from being able to bend and undo your leash.

I`m sure i will get a slap if im wrong

i was caught once too in a reef, it's true when waves come you can't move that much, but u wait till one goes by and it calms down, then u unstrap it.
I was held down for a little bit, i couldn't get out, just barely got out to take a breath when i noticed i was caught, then i just undid my leash. but i couldn't get my board out, it was stuck and waves kept coming, so i yanked on it for a while, till it broke! really, then i surfed about 20 minutes more till i lost the board..waves were really good that day.. luckily my board didn't go to far... got it back and surfed my way out....
