I know how to carve up and down face of the wave for speed but it's crazy when i see really good guys do little hops to gain speed in situations like when there getting past the wash to get back in the green. How the hell do you do this? lol. It looks like there doing little jumps forward to gain speed. it seems like a much quicker way to gain speed than carving up and down wave.

sounds like you're talking about chop hops, which is what you do as a last resort if you're about to lose a wave or you need to make a section. basically it's unweighting so that your board can make it through a weak section. in general is better to create speed by doing turns, placing yourself in the most critical section of the wave (the curl), or doing floaters off of closeout sections to get that burst of speed to make it around the closeout. sometimes chop hopping looks spastic and unnecessary. looks cool when you're spinning a 360, but sorry can't give you advice on how to do that.

sorry, my husband told me i'm mistaking what used to be referred to as the Huntington hop as a chop hop.

Less board in the water, less drag, more speed.
Sometimes thru a boggy section you can hop, which in effect, will "lift or bounce" the board out of the water more and into a better plane across the face and then catch the speed you lost when you hit the boggy or flat section and lost speed...
I hope that makes sence....

i kind of put pressure on my front leg so it lookd like a bit of a hop but really its the opposite, the "hop" is just the board coming back up to the top of the water.

try doing a little bunny hop yourself next time you're out, it does work in giving you a little extra boost!
