Seriously... maybe a performance funboard you should look at not bigger than 7'6...

I am also around 5'1 5'2 so know how you feel ;) I absolutely HATE longboards as can't carry up, have to carry on my head etc... then it feels like I can't maneuverer as it's too big etc...

So got a performance mal instead, it worked wonders, still took time to get up and going compared to longboard BUT I had more fun, could turn easily etc. If your starting out I'd like you to keep that in mind ;) I've recently made a move to a 6'3 thruster board that is also not much width and it turns like a bloody demon X_X so fast it's hard to control even though I've surfed in bigish waves etc on a perf mal....

I can stand up somewhat ok on the short but when I do stand up fine, it's just very hard to control :P So get something wide if you really want to go that route, and nothing below 6'1 if your starting on wider shortboards... They are hard enough to control as it is, nevermind you still have to learn to catch a wave, popup, be stable, turn etc...

Just my 2 cents... And I'm about to get a 6'6 board tonight... Just to get you thinking about the fact that smaller =/= always mean better ;) there are too many factors to take in even without height....

you can start on any size board you want the question is will you be successful...probably not. if youre patient, persistent, and do some research and watch other surfers youll be able to get it down eventually. just expect the first few sessions to be tiring, you probably wont be able to paddle all the way out back at first if the waves are good. also expect a waterfilled nose and sore shoulders, it will be a lot harder work than you think. i started on a 6' shortboard, i couldnt catch anything and would just get pummeled. i bought a 9' longboard after a little and caught every wave immediately with that. went back to the shortboard in a week or so and after a few rough sessions i eventually got it down. i was also surfing everyday so i hope you can get lots of time in the water. most important thing to do is be patient, when the time is right youll stand up and catch your first wave and from then on youll never look back. good luck dude and just always remember to have fun out there!

funny thing... i actually tried to start on a short board. didn't workout for me. I hated it. I rented a longboard for a good day out in coco beach and wow. SO much easier, and of course i lost some money and got longboard. well worth it! I guess some people could pick it up easier than me but i felt confident too before hand. I usually go snowboarding every year and I skateboarded as a kid... so there my 2 cents
