I didn't come right out and say " NO, there is no ideal foot placement / optimum point on the board ! " I didn't say that's a dumb question. Questions are good, but answers may be not what you expect or hard to take.
First, I put out a hypothetical answer of 53% and 47% weight distribution. How would you find that ? And wouldn't those numbers change when taking the drop, trimming, rolling from rail to rail, stalling, pumping ? Also as all boards are different ( wide point forward, back of center ) you would have to adjust to each board's balance point anyways.
2nd, Giving examples from other sports is good so you can relate or compare. Where in those examples is being "wise arse" ?
3rd, in a debate or conversation, to take the position from the other person point of view, I considered if there REALLY is a perfect weight distribution point. Say future CAD computers and shaping machines, could leave two marks on the board the designate the perfect foot points. Even if they could, How could you find them ?
1) look and scoot - NO, because looking down you go down and scooting will kill you drive/timing
2) Binding or straps - no time, difficulty getting into to them, restriction of movement later
3) Glue / bonding - There are surfers that are "glue foot" never leaving there foot placement. They are stiff and so is their board movement.
4) Stud finder - ocean is too noisy to listen for beeps and LED lights wouldn't work ( and again looking down is not good ).
I was working with your point, not against it. What was wise arse about that ?
So that answer is to go BY FEEL. I never recommend marks, balls of wax , stickers to point our where a beginner should lay on a board. Why because things change. Same for your foot placement. You have to go by feel, adapt and change to the moment/situation. Be like nature/water every changing. Not set to rigid forms/numbers.
Sorry Saflyfish, next time i'll keep it simple and just answer " NO, there isn't an ideal foot placement / weight distribution point ".
