I like the retro look, I haven't seen them with wood blocks so like the nostalgic look, had it done on my minimal too

Too longer than 3 weeks but here she is. This one is more thinned out at the nose, tail and rails but 2 3/4 thick still, just doesn't seem like it. The extra width will make up for the less volume. Will post up soon on update

update: so now that my mini simmons itch has been scratched I am going back to a fish. Not as much because I did not like the simmons, but because with the fish I can have either a twin or quad set up (though I heard that simmons can be made into quads too, but not the original intent). The both perform about the same, but there have been some big mushy days (6-8ft) and although the simmons was a wave hog, it did slip out some on the steep bottom turns. I could get used to it, but why do so if I already have an alternative that I am used to.

So, the book closes. Loved my mini simmons, so will you if you get one.

UPDATE: So I kept buying a mini simmons to use as a small wave board, but it just did not work that way. It was fun, it was good for waves but not for 1ft waves. So, I finally stopped trying to surf small waves in a small board I ended up having one made bigger and it took care of it, for good. Here she is, it's 6'5 x 22 x 3. Small days solution found, but know it could just as easily been a funboard or fish or...

That looks a lot like a board I have been tempted by - for similar reasons

Now you have made me think my temptation should move into the acquisition phase

UPDATE: so I rode it for a while but it was not enough board for 1ft days, good for waist-high but I was looking for a longboard replacement. So my buddy tried it and loved it, he had put on some pounds and was using it as a replacement shortboard, and did great with it. That is, until he ran it into the pier and snapped it. He gave me the leftover pieces so I decided to make this a project.

I had it fixed, here is the board after being put back together:

So I decided it was too ugly like that, so I am doing a faux wood veneer on it. Here it is so far, I will post the final outcome when done:

Completely in half:
break.jpg

It's not commonly done since it add weight but if you have a fav board it's worth getting it done. Also, this is a thick wide board, so it's already not light, so adding more resin and wood doesn't make much of a difference.
My shaper used strips of wood to reinforce it and wrapped the broken area, it should hold forever, unless it meets up with another pier.

She is done. I used urethane instead of fiberglass to seal it, I think it should do ok. I am going to let it cure over the weekend then see how the wax goes on and give it a try on Monday.

Final Update on paint job:

So I was worried that I had not sanded it enough or treated it correctly. When I put on the fresh wax no peeling, a good sign. I took it out in the wrong conditions yesterday, head-high and closeouts. With all the closeouts and duckdiving I thought for sure the paint would peel but it help up nicely. The only slight damage is scuffing on the tail from the leash, so for my next project I will have to add a couple of coats to make it more durable. Super stocked, I now have an extra board that looks ok (better than what it did. Mahalo, stay healthy everyone

On the subject of painting surfboards, I did another one that was looking ugly:

Nice work! The faux wood design looks really good to be able to do that by hand. Do you work in that type of profession? Thats a nice talent to have in this hobby.

Ive been planning to paint over some repairs on my vintage Single Fin soon. I read that an Acrylic spray works well as a sealer, but it's nice to hear that urethane might be an option as well. Thanks for sharing how it turned out.

i'm a school viceprincipal, painting a board was just something to try and it was definitely fun. Here is the video that inspired me to do it:

I did it a little cheaper: instead of acrylics I just went to home depot and bought outdoor latex paint samples (cost $4 for 4 oz) and sealed it with semigloss urethane instead of dealing with fiberglass. It does scuff if dropped but so far not even the leash on a big day has taken any paint off.

That's really interesting how it makes the wood grain style. Thanks I might have to try that sometime.. new reason to pickup some more boards :woot:

Hey IB_Surfer how'd everything turn out? I found this post whilst trying to figure out if I should get a mini-simmons or a groveler and seeing your journey has been helpful. Sounds like there is no board, other than a longboard, that will work well on 1 ft waves. I'm currently looking at two used boards and can't decide which one to get. One is a 5/10 mini simmons for $300, the other is a Firewire twice baked for $475. The firewire is fat and thick, just like the mini simmons, but I'm not sure how differently it will ride.

Last update.

So a I used this mini Simmons in small days and it was good, but did not like it better than my quad fish. I like them equally really, the fish was prettier.

I tried it in bigger ways, and for sure it was inferior to my short boards.

I tried it in big mushy days and, though it did fine, my funboard was better.

So, If I did not have so many boards a mini Simmons would be a great board, but I dig my 2 funboards, my 5 shortboards, 2 step ups, my two guns and my fish that I owned before I got the Simmons that it was jinxed to be sold, and I did. The guy that bought it emailed me the following month and thanked me for selling it to him.

So, mini Simmons as a waist/chest high board is awesome, try one if you haven’t.

Thanks for the update. I tried my buddy's once and nearly broke my neck it went so fast. Sounds like between the simmons and the fish is probably very little difference, and you liked the fish more.

So I have heard that you can ride a mini Simmons 6inches shorter than your shortboard, I still haven’t tried that, bud I’m really happy with my short boards so probably won’t try it. Next surfer can let us know :) :)
