If you want to try something different, I will just throw out another option for you to think about, ha. My favorite board Ive ridden in softer waves is a Rocket. Good for 2-6ft, fast, pumps really easy, and turns ridiculous. Alot of volume in these boards. This is pretty much my all arounder. It catches waves almost as good as my retro fish and can surf circles around them once your to yor feet.

I wouldnt go any bigger then a 6'3" version of the rocket for that size. The full rails and wide tails give them a good amount of float, similar to a fish. I dont have any experience on the mtf but Im a fan of having wider tails on my small wave boards to get more float in the rear and speed. Tail seems a bit narrow on the mtf. Ha, and yeh Kelly makes anything look easy. He could prob rip on a trashcan lid. I catch 2ft waves on my rocket ok, but I usually have to surf it soft or it needs some sort of small curl. I think the board gets really fun when you get 3ft+. My twinfin retro fish would get into the wave slightly quicker, but I have alot more fun on this one.

Also I dont think anything can catch a wave as easy as a longboard, but I dont enjoy catching 1ft waves, so this board surfs my range 2-6ft fine.

yeah i don't think his tail is as wide either, but i definatly support a wide tail, have you ever tried a pin tail type to a short wide board? i've heard both good and bad. 6'3 sounds like what I would ride about right. thanks tri :D

I couldnt imagine surfing a small pin tail in small surf. I like my board to be loose so i can get as many pumps in for speed as possible. Pins have the opposite effect and will stiffen up a board and at that point your taking away from the characteristics that make a shortboard fun in my opinion. They have their purpose for large waves where u dont want to zigzag all over the face and need some more balance. In small waves though, a short length to fit in the face with some extra width for float is what I like. Some kind of tail that shortens the rail like a swallow or diamond. Ive seen alot of single fins with the wide nose, shorter length, and pin tails come out on bigger days but never tried one before. I imagine they could be fun in some head high waves. If you can get your hands on a rocket, try it out, you wont be disappointed. I shaped me a version for myself to play on and after my friends took it out they all asked me to shape them one also. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who doesnt enjoy surfing it. :)
