Ok sold it, but now I'm debating whether to replace it or not:

One the one hand, I love the glide of fishes, but I like the performance of my shortboards. Even yesterday it waist high at best and I had a blast on my 6'2" big boy shortboard. I still have another fish in my quiver, but it's bigger, I keep thinking I'm missing out on my perfect fish.

So, to fish or not to fish? What should a shortboarder do?

Ordered the new board today. Going with the exact same template but paying a little more for an EPS light weight blank with Epoxy resin and going 2 1/2" thick instead of 2 3/4, so the board should be lighter but floatier, so same glide but higher performance...I hope.

I really did like the last one, it had the glide of a retro but a little better performance, hoping with the lightness it will perform even better. Let's see.

Added bonus: the shaper is going to prime the entire board and paint right over the stringer, gonna have a solid green bottom with a fade to yellow on top, so it will look like it has no stringer. Kind of a cool look I hope.

Called the shaper, changed thickness to 2 5/8" but he is going to thin the rails a little, I decided I wanted more of a fishy feel, I already have enough shortboards.

Update: so my shaper goofed and forgot to make it 2 5/8", so he shaped it 2 1/2", plus on top of that he thinned the rails. Anyway, he started over on a 2 5/8", but since he already shaped the other board I'm going to be buying both, the goof one at cost, so I get to try both sizes. Both are shaped now, will have them soon.

The reason I decided to take both is due to the "shorter is better" movememt. The shape I am ordering has very little rocker, but has nose and tail rocker, so more or less like the CI Germlin or the Rusty Toad. I know it seems large, but at 205lbs this is like a 5'6" for a 140lb guy. Can't wait to try it, if it doesn't work for me I'll have a board for sale soon LOL.

Update: so I ordered the new board in August, when I visited my shaper in September it turned out he made it the wrong thickness, I wanted 2 5/8", he shaped it 2 1/2". So he ordered a new blank for me and shaped another.

However, so he would not get stuck with a shaped blank we talked and he will sell me the one withtthe wrong thickness at a factory 2nd price.

Today they are done, picking them both up. Both 6'1" half moons, one 2 1/2 with skinny rails and 5 fin setup and one 2 5/8 with tick rails with quad setup.

Unlike my other fishes I am actually getting one for it's intended purpose, smaller in size than my shortboards and will use it for small or mush waves. I'll post pics later.

Ok, the green one still has to cure, so taking the white one out to Oceanside tomorrow morning. Supposed to be 4ft with bigger sets, lets see how this fish handles bigger waves...

Took out the 2 1/2 out today at oceanside harbor. The waves where super mushy and at most shoulder high. The light weight and stiffness of the epoxy make it very much like a biscut board. Has great glide like a fish, but once on the wave it cut back and forth like a shortie , super snappy.

The G1000 on the tail are a little too big for the conditions, I like more glide on slopy days, will have to go buy some GX centers for it so I can switch back and forth.

Update: the green board is back at the shop, the shaper is going add some pinlining, there where some small paint blemishes and he's going to do me good.

Today I got to try the 2 1/2 (white) board at OB with a couple of feet overhead conditions and I am very pleased with the bard, it held up nicely in the steep waves and it was super easy to get into them. Only one wave goof but I think it was just a closed out waves and not the board. I switched to the step up halfway throgh the session thinking I needed more hold and later wished I still had the fish since it was harder to catch the rolling waves.

I think the fish is more like the CI Pod hybrish shortboard than a traditional fish, it just feels shortboardish in the waves, which I dig. So far I've been riding it as a quad, thinking of switching the setup to a thruster. We'll see

Today I got to try it in overhead but mushy conditions, so I put in the small GX trailer fins as a quad and it behaved like, well, a fish!!! Great glide, I'm 200lbs and catching a bunch of waves on a 6'1 board. I'll update when I use it as a thurster.

Also, I get back the green one this weekend, will let you know how it goes.

Interesting thread, and I don't wish to hijack it but with my new board dilema, i think its appropriate.

Basically I am looking for a new board, currently ride a 6'6" x 18 3/4 x 2 5/8 DHD. I am 5'8" and 81 Kgs, but due to progression am starting to find this a little big in the smaller stuff as its hard to generate speed.

I want something smaller, mainly for smaller conditions, something with some speed and drive. I am caught between a smaller short board, say 6'2 maybe 6'3, narrower and thinner or this :

Daryl is one of my local shapers, and the Pyg certainly looks like it could do a job for me, its different, but i can't decide. For info if I go for the shortboard it will be a custom by another local shaper, Steve Del Rosso (Clearwater) :

Just interested on your opinons on the Pyg and how it might compare to TMT's choices and my dilema!

That pig looks much like my new board, I say go for it. I don't like it as a thruster tho, but maybe that's just a personal thing, to me the quads paddle and catch waves way easier. As to size, I'm 200lbs (88.5kg) and my new one is 6'1 x 20 1/2 x 2 1/2 epoxy, would have gone thicker if fiberglass. If you want a wave hog keep it thick and wide, sounds like you have the right idea.

UPDATE: So, like the white board, took out the green board under the wrong conditions: OB was big, 1 or 2 feet overhead but with big mushy takeoff's into big walls. It paddled better than the white one but was harder to duckdive, but man oh man it handled steepness with no problem. It wasn't barreling, but definitely steep and it did not slide out at all and no rail goofs. In conditions where a semi-gun might have been the right board it performed great, making me reconsider quads for big days.

Happy with both, but I think I only need one, still thinking what to do...

Thanks TMT, I am swaying towards the Pyg, what do you think to the Vented Concave System? or would you stick with a single concave?

Choices, choices!!!!!

LOL, got that one too. After several shapers and different iterations I get shortboards singe to double concave and fishes single to slight V tail.
