As he puts it, 'you never know when you'll need every inch of your board'.

I heard that same quote before. I leave a little space inbetween the back wax spot and the front. Only abot 6 inches, but this allows me to stand up,and have my foot "slip" into position in back. That way my front foot is hardley ever too far forward on the drop, and turn. And the fron I wax to just past my chest, and also do the rails for grip wjile ducking and getting up.

I ussually just wax like from 6 inches in front of my tailpad and from there like 2 feet further so i just pretty much wax where my front foot plans on being and a little extra just incase i slip a little or something. oh and yeah i wax the rails where i grab to get up and i do it like on the very tail of my board where my toes are like even further to the tail than my traction pad because when i pop up my toes are a big role in gettin up because if my toes/feet werent on the tail i dont know how i would get up, i tried and its really hard

im totally nervous about waxing my new board for the first time, any suggestions to get a good foundation coating? last board i had was a bit bigger and on a recommendation i melted some wax and painted it on...it worked great until it started peeling.

Never heard of someone going to the effort of melting wax to paint it on!

Most people recommend a base coat (which is pretty thin) of the warmest water wax you can find then some wax for the temperature water you are surfing.

As far as I can work out this is because in cold water the wax that you touch alot gets warmed by your body heat and rubs off. The base layer still affords some grip.

As for being nervous about waxing, just remember - you will never do any irreprable damage to a board from waxing!

haha the paint-on wax is an old trick an old school longboarder taught me. I wouldn't recommend it for short sticks though. I was nervous about touching the pristine look of my board hahaha but i got over it and i think i did a pretty good job. theres a good video link from this site that has the Quick Humps owner showing how he waxes with different coatings. check it out.

Being worried about waxing a board is one of the silliest things I've ever heard of. Melting wax and dripping it on the board is the second.

Sorry - I just think people put way too much effort into thinking about waxing. Base coats and second coats and all that. I grab a good bar of Zog's, strip the wax from the board each season and re-wax.

Then as needed, top it off before going out depending on the temps.

It's not gonna damage your board - that's what trax pads are for.
