Board prices to quality?

Postby Ch-Ch-Chase » Sat Apr 28, 2007 9:01 am

Hey, I'm in need of buying my own board, but I know nothing about surf brands. I'm 17 so right away I'm not on-the-money :P and I don't wanna get ripped off by some brand name.

I'm gonna head to my local surf shop and talk to the guys there, and hopefully they'll be cool and not want to just milk me for what it's worth. But I figured I'd ask here, too.

What would you guys recommend for a cheap in price board but a good board? I just moved to Ft.Myers beach and I'll be surfing a lot, so, something that can stand a lot of use? Doesn't have to be extremelly cheap, but something that meets the midway point of like.. price and quality?

I weight about 130 and I'm about 5'6, 5'7 height

Any help is appreciated!

It depends on how good you are, I assume beginner?

If so then I would go with a minimal possibly made by bic or NSP and later upgrade to either a second hand fairly big shortboard, around 6'7/8, or if you're into longboarding than a better custom made longboard.

You could also search around the internet for cheap old longboards to start up on. Thing about bics is they will stand up to beginners wear and tear.

There's loads of other stuff on this website already about this if you search it.

West Coast Surfshop near you sells some NSP minimals as well as Southpoints. Check em out.

I've found the best value boards come from the recycling depot of my local garbage dump.... I got a sweet (but very old) shortboard with a very classy tiger-print pattern laminated on the deck, which also surfs quite well (but not as nimble as my good shorty).

The second board I got from the depot, was a 6'2 late 1980s thruster, with channels in the bottom, a wide tail, and it rides really well.

Each board cost $10 and I had to fibreglass up the noses and tails which were all damaged, but for the money, I'm very happy. My good board doesn't ride $650 better than my cheapy, plus I don't care about little dings.

When I bought my trusty longboard, I didn't bother with shops - I went straight to the shaper (in my case, Clicky at Lazicka Surf Designs in the UK).

That way, I got exactly the board I wanted, built for my weight and height and to my preferred riding style - and at a FAR more reasonable cost than an equivalent board from a shop.........

Just something to think about.........
