how to do re-entrys

Postby Beachbum » Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:17 am

I finally am able to do some decent cutbacks going down the face  . I was wondering how do people do these moves at the top of the lip? They bottom turn so quickly and make there board go vertical up the face which I am unable to do. Any tips on doing this technique?

Try surfing more off the tail and you need speed.

It's about the setup. It has less to do with the bottom turn and more to do with speed generated from working the face before the bottom turn. then, in the bottom turn, you want to make sure not to loose a lot of energy, so more rail, less tail.

BB, that's a toughy, because there are a number of ways to attack the lip.

But agree with RR on the setup part of things. If you want to pull off a huge gauge, then your looking at a smooth bottom turn with more rail. If you want to approach it vertically, you need to have more tail in the turn, and pretty much throw everything up there, including yourself, and doing basically a quick skateboard turn at the top as if you had one wheel on the coping.

In the end, you'll have to experiment with your turns to get you into the right position. As we all know, we don't all surf Macaronis regularly with mechanical waves where you can really hone your skills. Good luck.

All good advise but remember to spot where you want to hit and remember to bring those arms around and use your outside arm as the pivot. Watch Kelly and the crew do theres and watch waht they do with their arms. Its all in the arms shoulders and the amount of rail and tail your using!!

i would disagree, its ALL about the bottom turn. Focus on surfing top to bottom up and down rather than just aiming down the line and cutting back.
You need to drive as hard as you can out of your b turn to get vertical. Practice your bottom turns, you can never be too good at it, you need to drive really hard off your fins to get vertical up the face, the harder you can push your bottom turn the more speed youre gonna have at the top of the wave to do your turn. A sloppy stalling bottom turn robs you of speed and you wont make the turn at the top, but get your bottom turn right and your set up so well into the top that it just flows naturally so you dont have to think about the top turn once your doing it- you can focus on your next manouver. Maybe even experiment with driveier fins.

I think from this we can deduce from this that there is no 'right' way to do it, and everyone has their own style and technique
