I asked this question not long ago on here  .

Shortboards are more of a shape than a length.. My board is 6ft7, others are 6ft10 but are still definitely shortboards :D

I'll take a stab at this. It's not length that defines a shortboard (duh...that's weird!) it's shape.

If a shortboard is a long shortboard (i.e. a mini-gun) it can run up to about 7' or maybe 7'2". After that it's in the twilight zone of gun-land. Rhino Chaser, scary sharp boards that get a guy into trouble etc etc.

If it is wide & stub nosed, it can be a mini-mal from about 6'8" upwards. Less than that and it's an Egg?

Make sense? thought not.

well i would say you could get away with a 5'8-5'10, but the shorter you jump in board length the more work you will have to put into being able to ride your new board well. i started surfing in sept. 05 on a 7'6 then went to a 6'0 just last month, i'm 5'10 and 160. if you go with a fish you can get a board even smaller then that. if you are the casual surfer then i would go with a board closer to 6'8, and slowly progress to something smaller.

you can search online and pull up size charts and it will tell you exactly what size you should be looking for depending on your skill level. i had a link but its dead now. make sure thats the board you want to start out with(meaning a shortboard) and have the waves to use it on ur not gona have any fun paddlin your ass off tryin to catch thigh waves on a shorty.
