How dare you put thoughts into my head. What gives you right to suggest even the tinniest 'seem to think' I may have. xxxxx.

DBBB is free to suggest whatever he want as this is an open forum and afterall you are the one who keeps insisting on mentioning the fact that you DJ *looks for the bored smiley*.
I guess you're an aligator wrestler as well seeing as you're insanely brave.

My next door neighbour (bit of a petrol head with a collection of V8 Holdens) has got a real snotty Waverunner, and he said I could borrow it, so if you're ever in NZ, I'd be more than happy to have a crack at towing you into a few good ones. I've got a towbar on the 4wd, so no worries to get to Papas, nice spot too, very picturesque.

I reckon it could be a good laugh.

Well, once I get the money (I run a Deep House and Techno record label too, so the money will be rolling in incrementally faster with time) I will be moving my surfing farther afield, with greater frequency, so if I ever have the time to devote to a week in NZ, I may just take you up on that (very kind) offer.

Much appreciated, thank-you.

Well i hope your label works out and all but dont think just cause you have a label money is gonna come gushing in. The music industry is very hard to break into. Best of luck no sarcasim intended

All valid points. I only mentioned anything regarding what job(s) I do, in order to convey the levels of 'free time' I have potentially available.

Sorry for any offense caused.

I'll keep my intentions to myself from now on, seems to cause more aggro than is at all necessary...! Thanks for all advice and opinions given, they are all on board fully. Appreciated!

haha i miss threads like this.

the only bad thing i have to say is u said not intrested in doing tricks most tricks in surfing are not tricks but a means to stay surfing the wave as long as pos. 99% of tow surfers are fleashing good surfers on matter what waves they ride pulling off tricks too. the resson i say this is you need to get your butt out no matter what size the waves are and lean to read all different types of waves well, before u even think about tow surfing. when u can rip on nomal waves waves then come back and ask this again.

erm.....well this thread went a bit weird eh?
Hi factotum and welcome to the forum, please take a seat and help yourself to a chocolate covered hobnob, i'll put the kettle on.

What makes you want to charge big waves specifically? Have you been overdosing on Riding Giants? - I feel your pain! Is the buz of 4ft and clean not good enough for you? :) I must confess I didnt read all of your first post - too long for my concentration span, im only interested in my own words when it gets that long  Try not to pigoeon hole yourself - the big wave riders are all round water men - so dont write off tricks and stuff....open your mind maaaaan
You seem very confident, perhaps excesively so which is why you have been a lil flamed on here but who knows, maybe that will help you charge those 40 story waves or whatever. :ninja:

What type of music do you DJ? My bro in law is a breakbeat and live dnb act and DJ, tis indeed a hard business to break into but a labour of love no?

My beer glass is empty...duty calls! Catch you soon.

Only thing I would add to this masterpiece of a forum is to rebuke some of the shade thrown at UK/ European surfing.

You can really tell this was before it got well known that British and Irish surfers were pioneering some of the heaviest waves in the world off Ireland, and Portugal. And before it became a regular thing that Hawaiin pros started popping up in Norse shore slabs making YouTube series.

Don't judge a surf scene without knowing what you're talking about.

ZOMBIE thread!!!! This thread died in 2009 and now it has come back to life! Who says there is no life after death? Lots of names that are no longer around. Very cool..... I remember quite a few of them.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

My advice for anyone wanting to try tow in surfing is to find a friend who is also interested preferably someone with a jet ski. Or together get a jet ski and practice on smaller waves. Number two is surf gradually bigger and bigger waves without the jet ski. Number three is get to know the tow guys already doing this and the breaks where they are doing this and get their advice. There may be training that is available particularly jet ski rescue training which is what is needed to be safer in those conditions. Ideally both the tower and the surfer will be trained in jet ski rescue.

the one thing you notice from many of the greatest surfers in the world is their sense of humility...they've stared into heaven and they've stared into hell. They just know, and often never really need to say.

Just sayin'

I've been a pro musician for 45 years and run a record label for 36 years - the music biz has gone Pete Tong, making money selling 'records', particularly singles is virtually impossible these days, even if you sell only on streaming platforms you have to have millions upon millions of hits
to even make minimum wage.

oh that sucks. I know a woman that got her song used on a nation wide commercial and she made a couple hundred thousand but beyond that it was tough going. Is no one buying music anymore (besides me)? Perhaps the music world is flooded with artists and wana be artists? Maybe the internet has allowed us to see all these new artists and in the days before they were just some person singing/playing music at parties or on their own? But it seems to me the music industry has always been brutal to new artists.

My impression of the best and biggest wave surfers is they may speak humble because they have been beaten down by the ocean too many times but they have huge egos behind that. You need a lot of confidence to surf in critical waves.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Haha the thread just came up when I was trying to research about a route into towing. Had no idea what sort of masterpiece i'd stumbled into.

Thanks for the proper advice that's all sound. I've been surfing for 8 odd years in UK and on trips abroad, been getting on OH+ points and reefs for a little while. Was out in Hossegor in Feb on 10 ft swell and there was skis everywhere. I was paddling for hours against this horrendous current whilst they were towing into anything that moved. Definitley peaked my interest, but trying to figure out where to start and how un/realistic i'm being.

So you are contemplating tow surfing? Have you tried a big wave on a big gun first? I have an 8.5ft rhino chaser that I've used as big as 25ft, mostly around 20ft or so.

I ask because, unlike what most people think, tow boards are heavy, on purpose, to cut through the massive chop that you get. They don't turn that great.

There are some big swells and good spots to try big waves, you will learn more about the feel of a big wave that way so that you are ready for tow surfing. Most surfers start paddling into big waves before doing tow-in.

My advice, but I haven't had the urge to try tow surfing, so can't talk from experience.
