Help on my pop up

Postby Mohawk918 » Thu Sep 01, 2016 4:13 pm

Ok so ive been surfing now for almost a year and i have my pop up down on my longboard. I can pop up bottom turn and start to walk some. No ive had my shortboard for about 3 months now and i had a little trouble at first but then started to pop up a little and surf it. Now all of a sudden im back to square one. Im having the hardest time getting to my feet. The issue i have is on my longboard i can use my feet to help me push up and get my pop up, obvioulsy on my shortboard my feet hang off. I try to pop up and end up knee boarding it down the wave or completly fall off the board. ive researched ways to practice this on dry land and all i see is just practice the pop up (which doesnt show me or nothing what im doing wrong) and the other is what i saw called the chicken wing (which looks like it would take to long and also drag my knee in the water). Please help me figure what i need to do. Do i practice popping up with my knees instead of my toes on dry land or should i work on this chicken wing techique till i get the pop up down? Thanks yall

Practice on your longboard....raise your feet up in the air before you pop up and don't use your feet.

Do this:

Next sesh or during practice, try putting your hand further back towards your ribs/waist when popping up(right hand for regular stance, left for goofy). I had that same problem for a bit and that little tweak helped out a lot.

I watch that video with the sound muted....pictures are worth a 1000 words.... :)

Notice the bit that he begins his push up without hands....just a split second at real speed, but his action of arching up using his body first helps getting the hands lower and the body in the right positions.

i dont see moving my right hand (regular stance) back further helping at all. i did move both back more and that possibly helped a little more. ill keep working on it. My knees are being rubbed raw from the carpet though.... lol

focus on the but. you must push really hard up in an elastic way. in the process make sure you center. at the moment my toes sometimes are in the way. when im tired after loads of times my right knee softly shovels the ground. i guess thats a fitness thing.

basically just to tell what that guy is doing

1. hand next chest. flat on board
2. body curved up. face looking front
3. feet outside shortboard short moment up
4.hit push hips up as hard as u can.
5. feets are taken with the push move into position of shortboard
traction pad backfoot centered and front foot middle of the board in center
6. in the process droppin and lean a bit forward to go with the board. make sure there is pressure on the backfoot. and the frontfoot is to adjust the balance.

thats it in theory

thanks for the video. very practical and easy to use wherever you go. flatground is harder. a bank is better.

there is also the chicken pop up, but i hear it is good but also a bad habit. can anyone explain why?

If your knees are hitting the carpet you are doing it wrong! As said above maybe your butt isn't high enough - this is why hands back helps, more butt height. It's not a 'life your shoulders' movement, it's a lift your hips movement

As to the chicken wing, the down sides for me are that it puts a lot of force through your knee (injury risk), there seems more chance of it going wrong (eg back foot slips) and it only works for boards where your back foot wants to land on or near the tailpad ie short boards. Otherwise you pop up and have to move your back foot forward straight away. It's something that is easy to do on land but much harder in the surf. But if it works for you, go for it. But there is a reason pro surfers don't do it

Just came across this video on the pop up which breaks it down frame by frame (also good push up technique)

What you should focus on is

- look at his shoulders - they stay the same height more or less; all the movement is core and hips (then legs)

- for any beginner (although it's not mentioned on the video): pay attention to where jordy is looking as he pops up and the angle of the board on the wave

All the advice has been great for pop up technique, but the OP said he got the pop up "down" on his Longboard but NOT on the shortboard. So a factor should be the board length and not being able to push off from the toes, but i say the factor is the WHERE on the wave the pop up is made. On a longboard you get in earlier and get to your feet BEFORE the wave breaks. On a shortboard you get to your feet AS the wave breaks. Basically you are not Popping UP onto the board, but Jumping back DOWN onto the board. The wave stands up vertically, the board drops down falling away from the face, you jump onto the deck, causing the rail to engage, and then water displacement and resistance create momentum. Longboards ..... you just follow gravity.

For Longboards, look at it as pushing off on a skateboard and rolling down the street, your on the deck early. For Shortboards, it more like trying to Skimboard, you CAN NOT start with your feet on the deck, you have to Run full speed, throw the board down out in front of you and then jump onto it as it's already up to momentum.

Same for getting up on a shortboard, it more confidence, situational awareness, and experience of knowing that your board is here.

Can't remember if dtc or Big H linked me that popup video, and gave some advice, I stopped having issues with my shortboard popup, overall simple advice, raise your feet in the air, hands lower near your abs and hop, make sure you land in the middle but with your weight forward so you go down the wave and don't end up carving your way down which never works and ends up as a wipeout because you get hung up in the lip or will simply lose the wave.

good i need those details as well. so pressure your front foot and lean forward a bit to go with the waveflow.
