First shortboard-help needed

Postby lenteja » Sun Jan 18, 2015 1:21 am

I've been surfing for about 3 months(like two times per week). I'm 22 years old, 150lbs. (67 kg) 175cm 5feet 9 inches
The only boards I've used are foamboards they gave me in the surf class (I started in a 8 feet and for the last month or so I used a 7 feet foamboard). I'm able to catch waves pretty well but I feel that the foamboards I'm using aren't letting me improve that much.
I'm going to buy my first hardboard and hopefully surf even more often(everyday maybe).
They have offered me a second hand 6 feet al merrick Dagger(a shortboard but a bit wider than usual about 30 liters, it's intended for small waves and supposedly it's easy to paddle)

My question is, do you guys think that this board is a good idea or I'm really going to struggle with it? I surf in San Diego area.
Thank you very much for your help, by the way I cannot try the board before buying it.

Nope, that's too small. Much too small.
Also, it might be a 'small wave board', but it's still a small wave board for skilled surfers (and I think 'small' might be a relative term here too). And it's not particularly wide or high volume either.

You're right in that you need to move away from the foamboards, but a proper surfboard is a world away from a foamie, so don't compare them lengths-wise. A 6' shortboard would be a very poor choice for a first board.
If possible, hire a mini-mal for your next lesson (something around the 7'6 mark) for your first go on a proper board. This'll give you an idea of where you're at.

If you've got the skills (the thing is, you can't really tell from a foamie), then you should be looking for a hybrid-type shortboard, something with a fair bit of length (say 6'10) and a large amount of volume (21" wide and 2 3/4" thick).
Jumping straight onto a high-performance shortboard is just a recipe for frustration :?
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

Thank you very much! I once tried a 7,2hardboard and I did well with it. I'll try a couple of more boards before I decide to buy one, thank you.
