Channel Island Weirdo Ripper advice

Postby hagdouglas » Fri Aug 01, 2014 3:21 pm

Hi everyone !

I've been doing some surf since june at huttington beach CA for two month 5 days a week on longboard and i'm back in France and i will surf close to Biarritz. I tool lessons my coach said that i've been really good on take off and i have a good technique for a beginner. I'm really motivated and i will try to surf at least 3 times per month on south of france since i'm leaving in Paris.

I was looking to invest on a shortboard and the Weirdo Ripper caught my attention. I was woundering if its kind of possible for me to go to this kind of board , what do you think ?

The calculator on Channel island recommend me this size : WEIRDO 56 x 19 x 2 1/4 26.2L

Thanks !

That's a small small board with only 26L. I think pro's short boards typically range from 28-36L in volume. Unless you are 4'10" and 90lbs I would think that is way too small. Best advice is to get good on a long board first. If you must continue your progression on a short board I would go with something close to 7' tall and mid 49-50's in volume in Liters. The Weirdo Ripper or Average Joe would be my choice if you insist on starting on a shorty - just go bigger. I have a 6'7" Joe that is 54L in volume that is very user friendly being that it is really wide and stable.

Hey !

Thanks for your input i was surfing on CBC Surf board 7' so this why i want to uprgrade to the shortboard even if its not going to be easy at first but i'm not affraid to difficulty. I didn't know about the volume , i just followed the guide on channel island , i'm going to look for a weirdo on 6'7 with that same amount of volume

Yes. I would like the 6-6 myself. It's going to be a bit difficult but I think the shape and volume should work for you as well as a board to keep as you progress. Good luck. I still think a long board for a beginner is the best route to progress your surfing. A good year on a long board would do several things for you. 1) actually catching and riding waves while learning. 2) Learn how line ups work 3) Learn how the ocean works 4) learn how to go left and right 5) learn how to get out when its bigger All these things except the last are much easier to learn via a long board and having plenty of foam as your friend. Going to a shorty tends to prolong the learning curve substantially. Besides I think most surfers have a long board in their quiver just because they are fun.

Check out the firewire volume calculator, this allowed me to get a shorty right on the edge of what is acceptable for my height and weight, my js evo really performs amazingly and doesnt feel like you are trying to turn a log.
