6'4 confusion. Please help.

So I'm looking at buying a Santa Cruz Pumpkin Seed. Now before you press the back button because I'm talking about a pop out, I just need your help. In this link http://www.nhsfunfactory.com/item/44941 ... mpkin-seed the board says suggested weights. I'm 6'1 and 148-150 pounds. Im just confused of why they suggest that weight for this board. Will it not work well with me? Or does it mean I'll just float better but have a harder time turning? Please help if possible. Thanks

No problem with the board, quality unknown to me, it would be a reasonable board for your size and weight, if you have trouble turning it , that will be your ability level not the board.
About the weight charts and relationship to experience that is valid, a more experienced rider can can push a smaller board even though he might be heavier.
Not a bad guide of which to take notice.
As for pop outs, smop outs, so what ?
You can have a custom made board they can be a dog do too.
In the end it is about your personal choice and your financial circumstances.
Better a slightly bigger board, you at least know you are not going to struggle.

I'm 5'11" and 170lbs, and I bought a 6'4" Channel Islands K-Small board even though by there recommendations I should have gone smaller. I was transitioning from a 7'8" board, and it felt like a super easy transition (just needed a little more paddle). After 3 times of using the board I actually already wanted to transition smaller, and I already had a 5'10 proctor rascal that I use now (the 6'4" actually feels way too stable in smaller surf).

I do think I will still get some more use out of my 6'4" board once I try some bigger surf (5'+) and I will appreciate the stability when learning how to catch bigger waves but for now its definitely not a fun board to use in smaller surf.

I just pulled up the web site, it says Novice 170lb or under.

The problem with a pop out board is that they only make so many sizes, so you get what the others get. The suggestions as to size are genralities based on that specific size, 6'4 x 20.5 x 2.45. For example, at 200lbs I would use that board, but I'm experienced, but I can also use (and have) a 6-1 x 20 x 2.5.

So, could you go smaller? Sure. Could it be too big for you? Maybe. But that is the only size they offer in that board, so you either get it or move on to a different board.

Remember, for begginers the bigger the better, but as you get better you will probably go smaller. For you size and weight I mgiht have gone with a 6'2" pumkin seed if they made one, but they don't.

They do have a 6'2, just not on the website to buy. Should i go with that? since im 6'1 145lbs?

How experienced are you? To be 6'1 and to surf a 6'2 (or even a 6'4) would require a fair bit of experience. If you're experienced enough to ride a 6'2, then you probably won't want a pop-out anyway.

I'm going with the 6'4. I don't really care about the pop out idea when it comes to Santa Cruz, the reviews and videos I've watched really make the board seem great. Of course it won't be the best and as i progress to advance I'll feel the difference, but for now I'm just a casual surfer out there not really worrying to much about full feel.

Actually, there is one more reason to buy bigger. If you buy the 6'4 it will be great for training, but after you get better you will buy smaller and keep this as your big wave step up, so win/win
