You wont be able to surf sizeable waves for awhile, at least two years. That being said, a bigger board is easier for catching smaller waves. A bigger board will make paddling into smaller waves much easier and begin to allow you to ride the face. My advice is to start on a bigger board. Maybe not a long board, but a mini mal or funboard shape would be ideal. You need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk. If you want to be super frustrated and not get any stoke, then starton a shortboard.

I'm not trying to disagree but I've been surfing just under a year and I surfed my first overhead. But then again I'm more of a jump first ask questions later type of guy haha.

I was a terror when learning, used to go out in big surf balls out. I usually fell a lot, but I always made sure to sit out side the lineup so as not to bother more experienced surfers. Some of us just have to go to it...

Yes, but in the overhead waves, were you really catching waves, and riding and carving the face, or were you just trying to survive? If you've been surfing less than a year, and your paddling out in OH waves and catching waves, and getting up on the face, congrats, you're the next Kelly Slater. When I started, I paddled out on big days also, and took a beating, didnt' catch any waves, and ran to my car with my tail between my legs. If I managed to catch a wave, it was a hold on for dear life and try not to fall.

I wouldn't recommend going out in big surf as a beginner, but I think I was at least a year into surfing and picked a surf spot that handled big surf a little nicer, not big closeouts or expert waves. I remember paddling out at PB point on a 10ft day, sitting out there for 2 hours, falling twice and getting ragdolled, then finally catching one perfect wave that had a long long shoulder and taking that one in. Having sessions as a beginner where I did not catch anything was normal, not desired, but it happened.

Again, not recommended, but some of us do, just be aware of the surf spot and surroundings.

The conditions in my area is pretty much perfect for shortboard (I've been told). I've set myself a goal, that i'm gonna ride a shortboard at the end of this season. So i'm not gonna crawl that much longer ;-)

I read they started out a year ago, but are doing really well.
