Board transition...

Postby Cino88 » Tue Mar 12, 2013 12:25 am

Hey guys. I'm looking to jump from my 7' 2" minimal to a 6' 2" MR twin fin I have been given. Will this be tricky to do? I am 183cm and 80kgs.

If you are catching waves fairly easy, and are riding the green face then you should be fine. There will be an adjustment period, but that is to be expected when riding a new stick.

If you are still trying to catch the white water then you're better off sticking with the mal until you feel like you have mastered it.

I am catching the green wave with high success rate and manage to duck dive the waves as well. I'm mainly after a faster board.

Before you go to a faster board you need to go faster on the boards you have, try a little extra front foot pressure.
Most people at your stage are still heavily leaning on the back foot and being in a continual stall.
Changing pressure between front and back foot enables you to shift the board and also you can learn to find the power pockets in any wave, that is an advanced skill to learn but will put you in a place where you can generate more speed. Good surfers go from power point to power point often with a carve from one to another gaining speed from each.

I say go for it. I transitioned from a 7'10" softop to a 6'2 fish just fine.

That is a big transition. I would aim for something around a 6'6 if you can.

Also small boards are (generally speaking) slower, not faster!
