What size board?

Postby legendskillz » Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:28 pm

I have been surfing for about 5 years and I am pretty experienced. I have been riding a 6'0 rusty redline for a while and its time for a new board. I am 6'2 and weigh 140 lbs, i am going to be ordering a high performance thruster from my friends shaper and i need to know what size and thickness i should get. I love the 6'0 redline but i am not sure if i should go a little bigger, maybe 6'1-6'2. Since i am fairly light i am wondering the thickness and size of board i should get. I was also wondering if i should get a round or squash tail. I do a lot of snaps and cut backs, but i like to go for airs every once in a while. I usually surf beach breaks 1-6ft.

6'2 and 140 lbs?

Have a look at the firewire board forum, not because you are getting one but there is a bit of discussion about the pluses and minuses of volume in a board and where the volume is situated, plus things like rocker and rails etc (the discussion is comparing the various Firewire boards, but the concepts are useful to understand). Also the Swaylocks forum has some discussion on these issues. Neither will give you 'the answer' but will help you understand what questions to ask.

Basically, you need to think about what you like about your current board and what you dont like, and then design your new board from there. eg too hard to get into waves perhaps = slightly more volume (or perhaps lower rocker). Too fast or too slow can be cured. Not good in big waves or not good in small waves - your new board can be designed to be better.
