EPOXY or FIBERGLASS

Postby pjsurfer » Sun Aug 09, 2009 12:13 am

Hi everyone I recently got a new board. It is a 6'8'' epoxy and a cupple people I talked to didn't like it because it wasn't fiberglass. I think the only thing that matters is that I like it, but I want your guys opinions.

Many epoxies are factory made in china. They are very durable but some are just not that good in the water, some are, so many just write them off as bad boards. Part of it is the sentiment that if a local or well known shaper did not make the board by hand then its's no good. I only get custom epoxy shortboards from my shaper, the rest of my quiver is fiberglass.

However, if they are not talking from experience then they are just talking out of their corn hole, have them try it and then tell you what they don't like about it, try theirs too, see if you agree with them or not.

Lastly, to give you an example, my bud and I are about the same height, he is 15lbs lighter than me. He loves his tuflite flyer, I have the exact same one and don't really love it at all. I can surf it, but it's not my favority by far, but for him it is. We all have our own tastes...

Thank you that is some good information. Actually my brother is one of the people that don't have respect for my board, because it is epoxy and not fiberglass like his board. Next time me and my bro go surf I'll have him try it out.

like Math Teacher i get all my epoxies hand shaped by my shaper. I dig the feel of epoxy for certain types of boards and those certain types of boards are made specifically for certain wave conditions. But i still really like PU for other conditions and boards. I guess its a personal thing that you learn through experience. No one should make any assumptions unless they have the experience to back it up :-)

Depends on the board i guess....I have 2 PU and love them but i also have a firewire epoxy and it rides great. Some epoxy's will be really stiff in the water. But some like my firewire are made to flex, so it doesn't feel stiff or skip on the wave. All in all if you like the board and it works for you, who cares what everyone else thinks.
