Fin selection

Postby cahungus » Fri Feb 20, 2009 3:32 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions for me. I ride a 6'8 weber afterburner in knee to waist high mush most of the time. Looking for fins that will accelerate well, but I'm not that aggressive so they don't have to be really stiff... but I weigh 175 so they do have to be somewhat stiff, I think. I don't want to buy a ton of fins trying to find the right setup, but if you all could help me narrow it down that'd be cool. I'm sure you all know their FCS on the AB.

depends a lot on style too. you don't need to buy all the fins these days as you can try the test drive centre providing you live near a surf shop that does that?

By trial and error and a lot of buying and selling fins I have it wired for my 195lb size:

GMB fins are my favorite all purpose fins, not a lot of cant or toe-in so they release super easy and glide the board much better. Use them on my 6'5"

OCCY are my favorite big wave fins, almost no toe-in at all so even more glide but you loose a little play, makes it turn a little wider. Use them on my 8ft gun and 7ft semigun

PC5 are my favorite small board fins, epoxy so super light, you'd be suprised what a difference half a pound makes, but the size and shape is not squirley at all. Great for beachbreaks

My personal favorites.

I will tell you which ones I did not like due to lack of glide or squirleyness, once again just my own personal experience: YU, AM, H2, M5, G5, PG5, M7. Also, I hated the k2.1's and k3's because they have a smaller center fin and at my weight the tail slides out, but I used them with a regular M5 center and totally dig them.

I think some surf shops have test fins, call around. Also, if you surf in San Diego email me at mr_govea@yahoo.com , we can go surfing and you can try some of my fin setup's on your board so you can buy what you like after trying them. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help, I can deal with trying 3 setups, little less daunting than a hundred.
