Be CERTAIN you are using the proper resin for the board.
From your description, it sounds like you might be using a poly resin on exposed epoxy and that's what is causing the 'softness'. I can't say for certain.
Firewire makes a good board. While they may be tougher in some respects, they suffer greatly from heat. EX/PS out gases at around 130F where a poly will go to 150F+ this is a huge difference because the inside of a car can easily get your board hot fast. Most of the delam I've seen from EPS boards was caused by the board getting too hot.
But no matter how well a board is made, if you don't like it, you don't like it.
I think the advice to get it professionally repaired is a very good idea. Most repair guys do excellent work for a bargain of a price.
