How does Progression typically occur?

Postby Tenaciousgreen » Wed Jul 09, 2008 4:34 am

I'm frustrated with my surfing at the moment and looking for some inspiration to take me on. Progression seems painfully slow at the moment and I am wondering whether I am following a typical pattern of progression.

I am really struggling with foot placement at the moment, my back foot ends up too far forward too often and as a result my ability to generate speed and produce effective turns is suffering. I too often end up stalling after the bottom turn and am not able to make the most of the longer waves. Its not as if I am trying to carve it up, just trying to ride the whole of the wave. When I do get a good ride and think I am making progress it all seems to take fade away in some distance memory.

Is this a typical fault of surfer progressing from crap to not so crap?

By the way I am having fun, just wanting to progress!

As long as you're having fun, you're progressing

I found that progression only happens when you look back on what you used to surf like. If ever Im not catching as many waves as I'd like, I remind myself how much I used to want to get out back but could never make it, or how I'd look at guys on the green face and think 'wow!'.

Now Im out back and on the green face, and I have to remind myself of that when Im frustrated 8)

last session out i had a revelation... everything just seemed to work for me. seems to be when i go out without a conscious strategy and just wing it i surf better...
wonder if its because i'm more in the moment cos i'm not thinking?

had frustrating moments and impatience with my progression before same thing with learning to play guitar... as soon as i stop worrying and try to concentrate on having fun it just sort of comes together..
