Quick question on buying a shortboard for use in Santa Cruz

Postby Insane in the Membrane » Mon May 19, 2008 10:28 pm

Hi there everyone,

I have been surfing for more than a year now( 2-3 times every week ) in either Santa Cruz( The Hook mainly ) and Half Moon Bay (Naples Beach) and am looking to buy a shortboard, of which I am not very familiar with.

I have gone from my first board (8' 2'' NSP) to a 7'6'' Islands Energy surf board, and I have no problems popping up or maneuvering on these boards.

I have been shopping around in Santa Cruz and have come across several different brands of short boards( CI , Rusty, SurfTech, M10 )

So far I have rented two shortboards just to try them out on The Hook on a good day :

6'4'' Pumpkin : Paddles ok, catches waves pretty easily, but also can pearl more easily because of a lack of a rocker,

6'1'' M10 fish : Paddles more easily than the pumpkin, easy to catch peaks, but terrible on small waves (<2.5 ft) , sharper turns

I was hoping to consult everyone's opinion here on the shortboard you might recommend for me ( 5'9'' height, 150 pounds ).

The main thing I am really looking for is a board that can thrust and still be able to turn more sharply than my current 7'6''

Thanks

Go chat to a locla shaper is your best bet that way you can get something custom made to your specific requirements.

If you dont want to do that then i would suggest something in the range of a 6'4 x 19' x 2' 3/8 or therabouts. With those dimentions you should beable to catch a range of size waves and conditions.

I use my 6'4 in anything 2ft up to 5ft. Then change to a 6' for 6ft+ and change back to 6'4 in 10ft+ of course this largely depends on shape of the wave not just shape. Thats what building a quiver is all about

Im not going to go in to specifics such as rocker, tail etc etc as thats something to be discussed if you go to a shaper. (i highly reccomend this option)

Hi isaluteyou,

thanks for the reply and dimensions suggestion, I will definitely try to find a local shaper over there.
