if its your first board go for a 7'6" bic or nsp, it wil be ok if you drop it and it will be good for learning on

i wouldn't go for a bic or nsp, sure there tough but the problem is they suck and there not worth much after you have finished with them, Id advise a circle one "mini-mal 7' 6/8". MINI MALS are wider than most other boards which makes it easier to begin on, then you can choose to go for a longboard or a shortboard once you have go used to it, pluS+ mini mals hold there price and sell with no trouble, most local shops will give you a good price to trade your board for a more advanced board.

Ps I have a mini-mal and i still surf it

also if you have done many lessons and are decided in what path to take (shortboard or longboard) then buy a shortboard or a longboard. Normally it shouldnt take long to get the hang of a shortboard
